These are some of my favorite cookbooks.

The New Basics Cookbook
This
cookbook is a must, even for new cooks. In fact, this is the book I
would give to a new cook. I still consulted it prior to cooking my
first Thanksgiving turkey because I trusted it would tell me everything I
needed to know, and it did. There are lots of basic tips
and techniques as well as fabulous recipes within its 800
pages! This is the first book I reach for when I am planning
to entertain. These are the same ladies who
wrote the Silver Palate Cookbooks (following). Every recipe I have
ever tried from this series is a winner!

The Silver Palate Cookbook
This book is 347 pages of easy to follow, yet impressive appetizers,
soups, salads, main courses, sweets, etc. There is even a section on
brunch. This book is extremely valuable if you like to
entertain. In fact, I guess the whole book is geared towards
entertaining. In addition to the great appetizers, it has a
section on cheeses, pastas, chicken, and even eggplant! Our favorite
for easy entertaining is Chicken Marbella. This is one of the book's
fool proof dishes that looks beautiful and tastes great. People are
always impressed with it but it is really easy to prepare. This book
is full of these kinds of fabulous recipes!

The Silver Palate Good Times Cookbook
This 400 page book, again from the Silver Palate ladies, is broken down
into Seasons and Holidays. I find this particularly helpful and
fun. This book is a must if you like to entertain with style.
For example, planning a gathering on July 4th and want some special
touches? It's in this book. It has everything from barbecue
sauce to Red Pepper Coulis! Entertaining family or friends on
Christmas or New Year's, or how about brunch on the porch in
Springtime? It's in this book!

The American Country Inn and Bed &
Breakfast Cookbook
There are more than 1,700 crowd-pleasing recipes from 500
American inns in 474 pages! Filled with fabulous breakfast
dishes, this book also has appetizers, dinners, and deserts. The
book is organized alphabetically by state and includes the address and a
brief description of each of the inns whose recipes are featured. It
is really fun to pick out a recipe from another part of the country.
Since these are dishes from country inns, they are usually hearty and easy
to prepare. It is also fun to find an inn you might want to
visit!

The American Country Inn and Bed &
Breakfast Cookbook
There are more than 1,800 hearty delicious recipes from 600 inns in this
second volume containing 599 pages. Since I loved the first volume
so much, Richard bought me this one when it came out. Again, this
volume contains wonderful homey meals from all over the country with
descriptions of the inns that originated them. This is a great
cookbook for people who like great tasting meals without a lot of fuss,
although there are fancier meals in here too. Of course, the
breakfast dishes are the best, but the dinners and appetizers are good
too!
